What is an automatic capper?
A capper is a machine that automatically places caps on bottles or jars, without damaging the containers. Cappers are designed to seal products hermetically, in particular, to protect them from oxidation, but also to maintain them under a given pressure and preserve their integrity and characteristics until consumption (beer, soft drinks, etc.). Automatic capping machines perform the following tasks:
These machines are generally height-adjustable to handle several different types of containers. They are usually part of a packaging line consisting of conveying, dosing, filling, labeling, vacuuming, etc. A vibratory bowl is commonly used to distribute the capsules. Capping speeds can reach several thousand bottles per hour.
Types of industrial capper and applications
There are three main types of caps:
Traditional or crown cap: a small circular object used to cap glass bottles by crimping the lip of the neck
Screw caps: used to close bottles and jars, with a threaded neck to receive the cap, made of a flexible polymer material, or composed of a metal cap (twist caps) and a seal that is crushed when the cap is screwed on
Pressure caps: which are simply pressed into place after the container has been positioned
There are capping machines designed specifically for one type of cap and/or container: classic capper, screw capper, pressure capper. But multi-purpose machines can work with all types of capsules. Some sophisticated models include an automatic learning module for new capsule and container formats. A capper can be pneumatic (with an air compressor) or electric, linear (with a linear conveyor), or rotary: the containers are placed on a turntable (carousel table) and then capped in parallel.
Some automatic cappers can operate in semi-automatic mode, with container positioning or manual reset. Capping machines are mainly used in industrial environments, particularly in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries, but also in the wine industry and certain laboratories.
