The purpose of a pelletizing disc is always agglomeration. Agglomeration is one of the key process technologies in industry. The technique is also known as particle enlargement or pelletization. All terms describe the same thing: the enlargement of individual particles of various materials. This enlargement can be achieved through several systems and machines, such as granulating mixers, pelletizing drums, and pelletizing or granulating discs. These discs are slightly inclined and flat-cylindrical in shape, rotating around their own axis. When fine material is introduced into these discs, it is continuously moved in the direction of rotation, repeatedly falling from the edges to the bottom of the disc where it is compacted into granules or pellets by sprayed liquids. The size of the disc, its inclination, or the rotational speed allows for precise control of the desired size of the finished granules or pellets. Sizes ranging from 1 to 30 millimeters can be produced. As the pellets grow, they gradually move to the surface or edge of the disc until they are discharged once they reach the desired size.
Granulating discs stand out as processing plants in production with many advantages. For example, they operate with very low abrasion and thus produce very little dust around the production or processing facilities. Supplied materials can be precisely dosed, and the good flow behavior within the discs results in highly uniform granules or pellets with a high degree of roundness. These are often delivered directly to end consumers – for example, in the form of wood pellets for pellet heating systems. The systems also produce fertilizers, iron ore granules, other fine materials, or salts for further industrial processes and consumer products. The discs can work continuously, ensuring a consistent, high quality of their output. Only minimal monitoring of input quantities or supporting liquids is necessary. Other machines, such as a preceding mixer, can further improve the quality of granulation or pelletization by pre-agglomerating the materials, thus accelerating the final production of granules or pellets in the discs.
