What is a Process Column?
A process column is vertical equipment designed for mass transfer operations including distillation, absorption, extraction, and evaporation. Process columns enable separation of mixtures based on differences in volatility, solubility, or density. The column provides contact area between phases—whether vapour-liquid, liquid-liquid, or gas-liquid—allowing components to transfer between phases and achieve separation.
Process columns are fundamental to chemical manufacturing, enabling purification of products, recovery of solvents, and concentration of valuable materials. Different column types address different separation challenges: distillation columns separate by volatility difference, extraction columns separate by selective solubility, and film evaporators concentrate heat-sensitive materials gently.
Process columns work in conjunction with heat exchangers for heating and cooling, reactors for upstream synthesis, and tanks for feed and product storage.
Types of Process Columns
Distillation Columns
Distillation columns separate liquid mixtures based on differences in component volatility. As vapour rises through the column contacting descending liquid, more volatile components concentrate in the vapour phase while less volatile components remain in the liquid. Distillation columns use trays or packing to provide vapour-liquid contact area. Applications include solvent recovery, product purification, and chemical separation.
Extraction Columns
Extraction columns separate components by selective dissolution in an immiscible solvent. Two liquid phases flow counter-currently through the column, with the solute transferring from feed liquid to extraction solvent. Extraction columns feature internals that promote droplet formation and phase contact. Applications include pharmaceutical purification, vegetable oil processing, and chemical recovery.
Film Evaporators
Film evaporators concentrate solutions by evaporating solvent from a thin liquid film flowing over a heated surface. The thin film enables rapid evaporation with minimal thermal exposure, essential for heat-sensitive products. Wiped film evaporators (also called thin film evaporators) use rotating wipers to maintain the film and enhance heat transfer. Applications include pharmaceutical concentration, essential oil processing, and chemical purification.
