Fluidized Bed Toaster: Description and Operating Principle
A fluidized bed toaster is a toasting furnace that operates by fluidization with hot air. The equipment transfers heat to the solid bed quickly and accurately, using convection as the predominant heat transfer mechanism. For this reason, they are also called convective toasters.
In the first phase of the process, the moisture is removed from the solid, so the equipment operates as a fluidized bed dryer. As the temperature increases and the solid particles are suspended and rotated over the air stream, toasting or oxidation of the product occurs.
The significant turbulence achieved in the fluidization chamber results in high heat transfer values, making the thermal efficiency of these machines very high, and the process times are quite short. The stability of fluidization in fluidized bed toasters depends on the size and shape of the solid particles, the flow rate and temperature of the gas, the pressure drop through the bed, the reactor geometry, and the initial height of the solid.
Applications of Convective Fluidized Bed Toasters
Fluidized bed toasting is widely used in the coffee industry for controlled toasting of coffee. It is also used for processing peanuts, nuts, almonds, and other nuts, improving the color, texture, and flavor of the product. It is also employed in the production of puffed rice, cornflakes, or other cereals.
Convective toasters are also used in the reduction, smelting, and refining of metals such as copper, nickel, zinc, lead, gold, and platinum. In this case, the goal is to remove impurities and improve the metal recovery process. During toasting, the metallic compound is exposed to hot oxygen (air) in the fluidized bed until high temperatures are achieved, which cause the volatilization of unwanted components.
At Foeth, we have available fluidized bed toasters that operate in batch or continuous modes, with capacities ranging from 2 to 5,000 liters and generating temperatures of 300°C or higher. If you need additional information about the operation of our fluidized bed toasters, please call or write through the Foeth contact form.
